Geriatric Medicine as Internist View


Abstract
Geriatric population are steadily increasing in this modern industrial society and comprise about 10% of entire population in developed countries. And the need for medical care in these aged population are ever increasing becuase of eugeric decline of all physiologic function and increasing incidence of degenerative multiple organ disease of old ages.
The practice of medicine among these aged population is differ compared with that of young and middle aged population and we need to have some attention in these respects. The characteristic points of disease pattern among the geriatric population are summarized and discussed as following :
1) Multiorgan involved degenerative diseases
2) Different pattern of disease onset compared with young population
3) Dominent mental and psychologic symptomatology on disease onset
4) Different normal limit of all laboratory test result, which may show lower or higher value compared with young population
5) Frequent occurrence of fluid and electrolyte imbalance symptoms
6) Different drug response and reaction
7) Much involvement of social and family factor in treatment
8) The concept of CARE for geriatric population rather than CURE
